Welcome to the Culinary Adventure: Foods to Try at 50!
So, here’s the scoop: My partner is a culinary chameleon, dabbling in everything from low carb to vegan, and everything in between. If there’s a food trend out there, you can bet it's been tried —for better or worse.
When we first crossed paths, I was a vegetarian, and he was... well, let’s just say he was the poster child for the “Meatatarian” movement. Growing up hunting and fishing, meant squirrel stew was an actual meal he willingly ate. And venison chili? A weekly ritual! But don’t worry, we did indulge together in grilled marinated mushrooms and pesto pasta—mostly to keep me around!
The Great Food Experiment
Fast forward to today, and guess who takes charge in the kitchen? Yep, you guessed it—not me! So, when he decides to switch up the meal plan, it’s a family affair. Our dining table has seen a wealth of culinary adventures from macaroni and (brewer's yeast & cashew) "cheese", wild mushrooms from Red Lake to chicken feet soup in Bangkok. And let’s not forget the raw beef in Prague—because why not live dangerously?
Despite the whirlwind of flavors, we’ve managed to dodge diet whiplash and stay full. Seriously, with a mindset that there are no foods not worth at least a taste, getting 50 firsts from a menu is probably easy. But starting at 50, we've turned food into a health regimen, and let’s be honest, it’s probably his best shot at longevity. Who needs a fountain of youth when you have a bowl of lentil soup?
Finding the Sweet Spot
After a few culinary misadventures (and some questionable choices we’d rather forget), we discovered that leaning towards whole foods, plant-heavy dishes, and a rainbow of colors on our plates is a total crowd-pleaser. The Mediterranean diet reigns supreme in our house for health, variety, and flavor. But don’t sleep on Thai, Korean, Ethiopian, and Indian cuisines—they’re bursting with flavor and offer plenty of vegan-friendly options!
